Trumpet Care
On first inspection, the trumpet seems really
straight forward and easy to maintain. But it is a matter of doing the maintenance
when it is needed.
Here are all the parts of our TRL - B trumpet. If you click on the picture you
can see the parts more clearly.
This is a perfectly clean new trumpet and all
the parts work as they should. The slides of the trumpet corrode easily if not
cleaned and re greased regularly enough. The valves on the trumpet also need
regular cleaning to keep them smooth and fast acting.
To keep your trumpet in
tip top playing shape, you need to regularly move the parts to see how they are
sliding. Each time you get your trumpet out to play, move all the slides back
and forth to check for sticky movement and feel the valves to make sure they are
not slow or catching.
When you finish playing, give trumpet a wipe over with a
soft absorbent cloth and drain the water keys thoroughly. Remember the more time
you play the more moisture will be created in the trumpet, and so the more often
you will need to service/ clean the instrument.
Keeping your Trumpet clean
inside and out and well oiled keeps it in top condition and ready to play.
It
is easy to keep your trumpet clean and it is generally rewarding doing the work,
but how often should it be done?
Well everyone is different, so these
following rules are just guides.
Play occasionally
Every 6 months clean and regrease slides, clean and re-oil valves
should keep your trumpet ready.
Play Weekly
Every 3 months or less, clean and regrease slides, clean and re-oil valves
should keep your trumpet ready.
Play
Daily
Every Month or less, clean and regrease slides, clean and re-oil
valves should keep your trumpet ready.
If this sounds like too much work, it
is not. It only takes a few minutes to pull out the slides, clean them, re
grease them and put them back, and it will make the slides work perfectly for as
long as you have your trumpet.
