It is a sound tradition to start new trumpet players on Cornet.
The Cornet brings the new player a valuable lesson in control of volume and tone and is generally played quieter than trumpet allowing that wonderful mellow tone to be generated. Having heard a superb Cornet solo when I was young has left me wondering why more more people don't choose this great instrument.
